Porta Flaminia

The Porta Flaminia was a gate in the Aurelian Walls of Rome that opened directly into the Piazza del Popolo and therefore served as the northern entrance of the city. For its association with the Piazza del Popolo, it became known as the Porta del Popolo in modern times. Historically, it was the starting point of the Via Flaminia, one of Rome's most vital roads as it was the road north leading all the way to Ariminum.

Trivia

  • Despite its database entry correctly describing it as the gate granting immediate access to the Piazza del Popolo, the Porta Flaminia is incorrectly situated far from that plaza in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. In the game, it is found in the northeast corner of the Campagna District, between the Porta Pinciana and the Porta Salaria. The entry goes as far as to explicitly state that this gate would later be known as the Porta del Popolo. The Porta del Popolo, in fact, still features in the game, but it is incorrectly named the Porta Aurelia.
