Ponte Sant'Angelo, once the Aelian Bridge or Pons Aelius, meaning the Bridge of Hadrian, is a Roman bridge in Rome, central Italy, completed in 134AD by Roman Emperor Hadrian, to span the Tiber, from the city center to his newly constructed mausoleum, now the towering Castel Sant'Angelo.

The Ponte Sant'Angelo is a bridge spanning the Tiber River, giving access to the Castel Sant' Angelo, from which the Borgia family rules over Rome. The bridge is one of the longest bridges in the game, and is the only bridge constantly guarded. Cardinals can often be seen walking to and from each side of the bridge, but as it is a restricted zone, Ezio cannot simply walk over it without being attacked by the guards.
In 1450AD, the bridge yielded due to the great crowds of the pilgrims, and many drowned in the river. In response, some houses at the head of the bridge as well as a Roman triumphal arch were pulled down in order to widen the route for pilgrims. During 16th century, the bridge was used to display the bodies of the executed people to the public.

Four sets of two guards are situated along the Ponte Sant'Angelo, patrolling their own section of bridge. The guards can be fooled by hiding within a moving crowd of Cardinals, but be warned; no group moves along the entire bridge without doubling back on the direction from which it came. To cross the river, undetected, the player must either swim under it or blend from group to group with some level of skill.

The Ponte Sant'Angelo was featured in one of the first missions the player is given in the game Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. Ezio had to cross the river without being detected, in order to attempt an assassination of the two male Borgias and to rescue an Assassin ally, Caterina Sforza.
