Piri Reis (1468 - 1555), full name Hacı Ahmed Muhiddin Piri, was a sea captain, cartographer, and secretly a Master Assassin specialized in bomb crafting.
Biography
Early life
At one point during his mid-teen years, Piri traveled with his uncle Kemal Reis, a Turkish pirate who mainly roamed around the edges of the Ottoman Empire, turning their passion into a profession by joining Sultan Bayezid's navy some time during the 1490s.[1]
Cartographer
- "An exceptional Ottoman cartographer, Piri Reis, has begun to compile detailed maps of newly discovered territories. We will find his workshop and steal what we can."
- ―An Assassin apprentice.[src]
After spending two decades traveling, Piri chose to do something more with his tranquil occupation; cartography. He thus established his own studio within the Grand Bazaar, and began studying and drawing out the progress of other countries. His maps were said to be "rendered in minute detail," and as such, caught the attention of the Assassins guild in Rome.[2]
Wishing to keep up with their enemies, who were spreading their influence into the New World, Ezio Auditore da Firenze sent a team of his apprentices to Piri's workshop. Upon discovering that Piri had been called away to sea, the team infiltrated the studio, finding and stealing the maps they sought, which had been hidden under an ugly decoy map.[2]
Afterwards, the Italian Assassins founded an Assassins Guild in the city.[2] By 1511, Piri had grown into a master mapmaker, and had also become a Master Assassin in the Assassins Guild, specializing himself in bomb crafting. That same year, Ezio Auditore himself visited Constantinople, establishing contact with the Guild. Befriending him, Piri taught Ezio how to craft bombs.[1]
Death
Piri Reis was publicly beheaded by the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman I.
Characteristics and personality
Piri was an intelligent and witty man, who could sometimes get grumpy when being interrupted.[1]
