Antoine-Laurent de Lavoisier (26 August 1743 – 8 May 1794) was a French nobleman and chemist, who is widely considered to be the "father of modern chemistry".
Biography
Antoine-Laurent de Lavoisier married Marie-Anne Pierrette Paulze when she was thirteen years old. She became his lab assistant and translator.
During the French Revolution, Lavoisier developed a poisonous smoke bomb for the French Assassins. When Pierre-Simon Laplace was placed under house arrest, Lavoisier urged Arno Dorian to rescue him as he feared for the man's life but Lavoisier himself was later kidnapped by followers of Jean-Paul Marat (who accused the chemist of selling gunpowder outside of the country) while out walking.
Madame Lavoisier informed Dorian that her husband had gone missing and the Assassin saved him. However, Dorian then learned that the poisonous smoke bomb formula had also been taken. Antoine Lavoisier returned to his wife while Dorian chased down the formula and the Assassin brought it back to the couple upon his success.
Lavoisier was eventually arrested by the National Convention, accused of being a traitor for his former place in Ferme Générale. Held at the Maison Nationale de Sûreté, Lavoisier was executed by guillotine in 1794 having been informed that "The Republic needs neither scientists nor chemists".
Legacy
Following Lavoisier's death, Madame Lavoisier fought to preserve Antoine's legacy as a scientist, and compiled his notes and memoirs for publication. The Helix database credited Antoine Lavoisier as the one who could best explain the world until the arrival of Einstein.
