The Perfume Trader (died 860s) was an Iraqi perfume merchant who lived in Baghdad in the 9th century.
Biography
In the 860s, the Perfume Trader and his brothers Alnilam and Alnitak made an alliance with bandits to attack the local merchants and their wares.[1] However, the Trade Delegate noticed something awry and set a plan to catch the traitor. Unknown to the perfume trader, he was set up with marked coins from the delegate,[2] who assigned the Alamut Hidden One Basim Ibn Ishaq to investigate the perfume trader's involvement at his quarters in the Oil Maker's District. After evidence was found,[3] the perfume trader became a target for assassination assigned by the Trade Delegate.[4]
Wary for his life, the Perfume Trader guarded himself with Turkic mercernaries at the Soap Boiler's District. However, his security detail was fruitless as Basim found and assassinated him secretly.[4] However, his death instigated his brothers to counteract and have the Trade Delegate abducted by bandits for the murder of their brother.[5]
