Panama City, now known as Panamá Viejo was the capital of Panamá until its destruction in 1671.
History
Henry Morgan was a buccaneer who raided Spanish settlements in the West Indies with the approval of the English monarchy under King Charles II by way of a letter of marque. Morgan was appointed commander of the buccaneers in 1668, and he organized multiple raids on Spanish settlements.[1]
In 1671, he violated the Treaty of Madrid which had ended the Anglo-Spanish War, capturing Panama City, looting it[2] and burning it to the ground,[1] in the process claiming the lives of a thousand Spanish soldiers.[2] Dutch buccaneer Laurens Prins[3] played a pivotal role during the raid, for which he was roundly celebrated.[4][5]
