Officials appear in Assassin's Creed II.
When Ezio commits crimes or assassinations, this causes officials, who are normally respected members of the society, to declare that they have personally witnessed Ezio commiting the crimes they attribute to him, without being true witnesses.
They are involved in the Notoriety system and killing one will silence them permanently, lowering your notoriety by 75%. Warning- Officials are usually aware of your appearance and will flee on sight, approach stealthily and/or quickly.
