Mount Athos is a mountain and peninsula which constituted the eastermost region of Chalkidike, a region of Makedonia, Greece. During the Peloponnesian War the mountain was home to a legendary lion.
Around 422 BCE, the mountain was visited by the Spartan misthios Kassandra, who eliminated the lion.[1]
