History
Family background
By the 20th century, the Miles family was related to the Assassin Brotherhood, a group dedicated to protect humanity free will against the Templar Order, their sworn enemy. The Miles were issued of two illustrious Assassin lineages, the House of Auditore, which fought the House of Borgia during the Italian Renaissance; and the Kenway family, which had a great involvement in the Assassin-Templar War during the Golden Age of Piracy and the American Revolution.[1]
William Miles was born in 1948. Like his ancestors, he joined the Assassin Brotherhood. In 1977, William received from Nathalie Chapman the blueprints of the Animus, a machine that could read the Genetic memory of individuals.[2] This machine was designed by the Dr. Warren Vidic, a member of the Templar Order working for Abstergo Industries, the Templars front-company. William went in Moscow and handed over the blueprints to the Russian Assassin Medeya Voronina.[3]
By 1987, William was in relation with another member of the Brotherhood who was a descendant of the 13th century Levantine Mentor Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad. Together they had a son, Desmond.[1] The Miles lived in The Farm, an Assassin compound isolated in the Black Hills of South Dakota, outside of Rapid City.[4] William trained his son to become an Assassin but Desmond was refractory to the hard ways of his father training.[5]
In 2000, as the Mentor was assassinated by the Templar sleep-agent Daniel Cross, the Brotherhood was nearly wiped out and William became the de facto Mentor of the Assassins.
In 2003, on his 16th birthday, Desmond decided to flee the Farm and abandonned his life as an Assassin.[6] Going to New York City, he became the bartender of the Bad Weather.[7] Desmond minimized public records on his activities to escape from his parents.[8] Every days, William tried to find his son, searching for his name or variation of it. At some point, William and his wife left the Farm and decided to split up to escape from the Templars.[9]
Around 2005, Desmond met a woman and unknowingly conceived a son with her, Elijah. Elijah was in fact a Sage, a reincarnation of Aita, a member of the old Isu civilization.[10]
Second Disaster
Between 2005 and 2011, William sent in Rome two of his apprentices, Lucy Stillman and Clay Kaczmarek, infiltrated the laboratory of Abstergo Industries, the public front of the Templars, to uncover the Animus Project led by Vidic. Stillman became the Vidic's assistant while Kaczmarek became the Subject 16, reliving the memories of his ancestor through the Animus.[11]
On 1 September 2012, Desmond was abducted by Abstergo to become the Subject 17 after the death of Kaczmarek. Desmond was put in an Animus to relive the memories of his ancestor Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad to recover a map of the Pieces of Eden for the Templars. In the laboratory, Desmond met Stillman who revealed her Assassin allegiance.[8] Together, they escaped the laboratory and joined the Assassins Rebecca Crane and Shaun Hastings in their hideout in Rome. Desmond accepted to work with the Assassins, developping his skills with the Bleeding Effect while experiencing the training years of his ancestor Ezio Auditore da Firenze in the Animus. Through Ezio, Desmond was contacted by the Isu Minerva who warned him about a near Disaster that could destroy the World.[12]
As the Templars attacked their hideout, the Assassin went to Monteriggioni to hide. Together they decided to recover Ezio's Apple of Eden to help them to stop the Disaster. While relived Ezio's memories in Rome, Desmond located the Apple in the Colosseum Vault. The team informed William Miles of their discovery. Touching the Apple, Desmond was contacted by the Isu Juno who forced him to kill Stillman as she was a Templar agent. Arriving in the vault, William decided to put his son in the Animus as he was in a comatose state.[13] In a memory of Ezio, the team discovered the coordinates of the Grand Temple near Turin, New York, which could help them to stop the disaster.[14]

William led the team to the Grand Temple while his son relived the memories of Altaïr and Ezio to escape his coma.[15] During the travel, William never left his son, even sleeping in the same room.[16] Completing Ezio's memories and unlocking a Synch Nexus, Desmond entered in contact with the Isu Jupiter who told him about the Great Catastrophe and the Grand Temple. After that Desmond woke up from his coma as the team arrived before the Grand Temple in October 2012.[15]
Entering in the Grand Temple with the Apple, the Miles, Crane and Hastings discovered a great chamber with a closed door. Desmond interacted with the Temple, reliving the memories of his ancestor Haytham Kenway, the Grand Master of the Colonial Templars who possessed the Grand Temple Key. Conflict grown between William and his son, as Desmond felt pressure to prevent the Disaster. William even punch his son after Desmond compared him to the Templars. Crane and Hastings remembered them they needed to put aside their problems to save the World.[9]

While Desmond relived the memories of Haytham's son, Ratonhnhaké:ton, to locate the Key, the team tracked power sources to access to the door. Together they went to New York City and São Paulo to collect two power sources while being confronted by Daniel Cross. Returning in the Grand Temple, the team located another power source in the Cairo museum. William went there and stole the power source but was captured by the Sigma Team led by the Master Templar Juhani Otso Berg. Desmond, Crane and Hastings received a message from Warren Vidic asking them to bring the Apple against William's live. Desmond infiltrated the Animus Project laboratory, killing the security guards and Cross. Entering in the room where his father was kept hostage, Desmond used the power of the Apple of Eden to force the guards to kill Vidic before killing themselves. Liberating his father, the father and son finally settled their quarrel and left the laboratory with the power source.[9]
In Ratonhnhaké:ton's memories, Desmond located the Key in the tomb of Connor Davenport in the Davenport Homestead. The team recovered the key and opened the door the 21 December 2012. Behind the door, they found the Eye with Juno consciouness asking Desmond to activate it to save the World. At this moment, Minerva arrived through Calculations to warn Desmond to not activate the Eye as it will kill him and liberate Juno who wanted to enslave humanity. Juno show a vision to Desmond that if he let the Second Disaster happened, he will reconstructed the human civilization but will be considerated as a god and his legacy will be corrupted to kill peoples. Desmond decided to activate the Eye, believing in the Assassins to stop Juno. Bidding farewell to his father and his friend, Desmond activated the Eye, protecting the Earth from the Second Disaster and killing him. William left the Temple with Crane and Hastings as the Grand Temple collapsed.[9]
