Melissani Cave is a cave situated northwest of the village of Sami on the island of Kephallonia. It was dedicated to Pan, the Greek god of the wild.
History
According to Greek legends, Kephalos, a figure that the island was named after, hid his spear in the cave after accidentally killing his wife, Prokris.[1] By the 5th century BCE, the half-flooded cave served as a camp for a group of bandits.[2]
In 431 BCE, a priestess of the Temple of Zeus requested the Spartan misthios, Kassandra, to look for the spear. After deducing the cave to be the hiding spot, Kassandra eliminated the bandits, retrieved the spear and gave it to the priestess.[1]
Around the same time, Kassandra also found one of the Ainigmata Ostraka within the cave.[3]
