Maximilien de Béthune, Duke of Sully (13 December 1560 – 22 December 1641) was a leading minister under Henry IV of France.
In 1634, the Duke of Sully expanded his townhouse to include an hôtel particulier at the bottom of a small garden, adjacent to the Place Royale, known today as the Place des Vosges. By then, he was beginning to go senile, and was known to flamboyantly walk about the arcades of the square while wearing outdated jewelry. In the meantime, his wife, 50 years younger, engaged in numerous extramarital affairs.[1]
