Manuel Palaeologos was an heir to the Byzantine throne before the collapse of the Byzantine Empire, and had "mysterious ties" with the Templar Order. After the Byzantine Empire did crumble, he traded his claim to the Byzantine throne for a comfortable pension, and became a wealthy man living in indolent luxury nonetheless, but didn't have any of the political power that could have otherwise been his.[1]
After Ezio Auditore da Firenze arrived in Constantinople, he tasked himself with finding out whether Palaeologos' true loyalty laid with the Byzantines or with the Templars.[2]
