"No, no, you're right. Let's all just screw around while the world falls to pieces."
―Lucy to Desmond in the Sanctuary.[src]

Lucy Stillman (born 1988) was a member of the Assassin Order and former genetic memory researcher for Abstergo Industries' Animus project. During her infiltration of Abstergo, she reported back information to the Assassins on the company's recent activities.

Once Desmond Miles had finished reliving his ancestor Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad's memories, Lucy helped him to escape the Abstergo laboratory. She then took him to the hideout, where he began his Assassin training, with the aid of new allies, Shaun Hastings and Rebecca Crane.

Biography

Early life

Before starting work with Abstergo Industries, Lucy Stillman attended university to study cognitive neuroscience, but was forced to leave when her mentors began to hold issue with her topic of study, which was considered pseudoscience. Unable to continue study at the university, she applied at a variety of locations, and tried everything to achieve employment, at one point joking to Desmond, "I was this close to waiting tables."[1]

Eventually, she was contacted by Dr. Warren Vidic, who offered her a position at Abstergo Industries. She accepted the offer, and immediately began working with Warren on his Animus project. For the first three years, Lucy was largely responsible for the design of a number of the Animus' functions and interfaces.[1]

While Lucy was on fairly cordial and friendly terms with a few other employees at Abstergo, such as Richard, these same individuals were later ordered to have Lucy killed, before Warren intervened, as he saw her as a valuable employee.[1]

(This story should be taken with a grain of salt however, since Lucy had not yet revealed that she was an Assasin when she recounted it to Desomond.)

It is mentioned, during Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, that Lucy was in contact with the Assassin's and sent them schematics for their own Animus technology.

Working for Abstergo

Lucy was first seen after she pulled Desmond out of the Animus, after she saw that his subconscious would not let him view the specific memory that Abstergo wanted. As Warren explained to Desmond what the Animus did, and what genetic memories were, she explained Abstergo's goal, though without revealing too much information to Desmond.[1]

Between sessions, Lucy asked Desmond questions concerning his past, and answered his about Abstergo, while trying not to reveal too much. She also stated that he was not the only person Abstergo was detaining, and that she too was an unfortunate captive.[1]

She then told him a story of how, in the past, Abstergo had decided to silence her, in order to keep her from speaking about the Animus; but before her assailants could eliminate her, they were ordered to stand down by Warren. She claimed that he had saved her life that day, and told Desmond not to judge Warren so harshly, as he was under a lot of pressure.[1]

As more time passed, Lucy left the door access codes in Desmond's wardrobe, so that he could finally leave his room. On top of the Animus, Desmond found Lucy's access pen, which had also been left there for him to find. This allowed him go through her computer and read her e-mails. Later, Lucy revealed to Desmond that she was also an Assassin, and was only undercover to learn more about Abstergo's plans.[1]

When Desmond finished his time in the Animus, three Abstergo executives, along with Vidic, decided to kill Desmond, seeing as they had retrieved the information they needed. However, Lucy intervened, and convinced them to keep Desmond for more testing, as his memories could still reveal more about the locations of the Pieces of Eden.[1]

Escape to the Hideout

A few hours after Lucy and Vidic left, Desmond was still trapped in the lab, where he had used his new skill, Eagle Vision, to view Subject 16's hidden messages.[1] Suddenly, Lucy rushed into the room, with stains of blood on her shirt from fighting her way through the Abstergo facility.[2]

Lucy told Desmond that there was no time to waste, and that he had to get into the Animus to retrieve the memory core data. Lucy wrote the data on a disk and, along with Desmond, fled the laboratory. The two successfully fought their way out of the facility, and eventually made it to the parking lot.[2]

There, they found themselves confronted by more guards. Quickly disposing of them, Lucy told Desmond to climb into the trunk of a car "for [his] own protection." When the drive was over, the pair arrived at the hideout. Before they entered the main room, Lucy told Desmond that she had brought him to there to train him to become an Assassin, by using the Animus 2.0 and its bleeding effect to imprint skills onto him, through another ancestor, Ezio Auditore da Firenze.[2]

Entering the main room, Lucy's fellow Assassins, Shaun Hastings and Rebecca Crane, introduced themselves to Desmond, and began preparations for the sessions. Later in the day, Lucy evaluated Desmond's progress by tasking him with setting up the security system. In between sessions, they also spoke of issues such as the Templars, and the status of other Assassin teams.[2]

After Desmond discovered the Vault in Rome by reliving Ezio's memories, the alarm went off as Abstergo invaded their hideout. Hurriedly, Lucy gave Desmond a Hidden Blade similar to Ezio's, and they made their way downstairs.[2]

When they encountered Warren Vidic in the warehouse, he reminded Lucy that he had saved her life. Both Lucy and Desmond engaged in a fight with the Abstergo guards, quickly defeating them. Warren was last seen in the back of a truck, stating that the attack was only the beginning before he fled.[2]

When Desmond started to go after him, Lucy stopped him and said that they would eventually bring Warren to justice for what he had done. Lucy and the others evacuated the hideout since it was no longer safe, and Abstergo would likely be back with reinforcements.[2]

They left in a van to hide in the mountains, and Desmond prepared to enter the Animus again to continue their search for clues. Meanwhile, Lucy continued to study the session notes to try to figure out what the "goddess" Minerva had meant, telling Desmond that everything she had feared was starting to happen.[2]

Search for the Apple

After a long drive, the Assassins finally arrived in modern-day Monteriggioni, setting up a new hideout in the Sanctuary underneath the Villa Auditore. She and Desmond both opened the door to the Sanctuary by passing through the underground sewers and tunnels.[3]

After Desmond relived Ezio's memories in Rome, the Assassins discovered that Ezio had hidden the Apple of Eden in a vault underneath the Colosseum. After Desmond retrieved the Apple within the vault, Juno took control of Desmond's body and said that "The Path must be opened. The scales shall be balanced." Desmond was then forced to stab Lucy in the stomach with his hidden blade, whereupon they both fell to the floor. Desmond entered a comatose state, though Lucy's fate is still unknown.[3]

Personality

"Let me guess, you're more the in-bed-at-six type."
―Desmond to Lucy while they travel to the Sanctuary.[src]

In contrast to Warren Vidic's personality, Lucy is a warm and appreciative individual with a bright personality. She always lends encouraging words and sympathy towards Desmond, though it irritates him sometimes. Occasionally, when Warren attempts to force Desmond to go deeper into the Animus memory, Lucy will stop him from doing so, and plead with him to allow Desmond to rest, showing her caring personality.[1]

Lucy is also both cunning and resourceful, keeping Desmond's night-time explorations of the Animus room secret, though she also becomes irate or worried under too much pressure. She is sensitive of the death of her colleagues, particularly her friend Leila Marino, as well as her role in Subject 16's loss of sanity, and the stress over the deaths of two Assassin teams in the field.[2]

Trivia

Lucy's concept art.
  • The name "Lucy" is taken from the Italian word "luce", which means light.
  • Lucy is modeled after and voiced by Kristen Bell.
  • The achievement "Conversationalist" can be unlocked in the Xbox 360 version of Assassin's Creed by talking to Lucy every time Desmond exits the Animus. Note that Desmond must talk to her completely, until she says that she's too busy to talk, or asks if he's tired.
  • In Assassin's Creed II, it is revealed that she is an accomplished fighter, taking down many Abstergo guards while she and Desmond were escaping Abstergo, and later, the Hideout. In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, she is seen to possess an amount of free-running experience.
  • It is implied throughout Assassin's Creed II and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood that Lucy and Desmond have feelings for each other. There is evidence of this from her caring for his well-being due to the bleeding effect, as well as hugging him, and saying that she's glad he's with the Assassins.
    • In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, an e-mail she received from William M. also further implies that Lucy has feelings for Desmond. The message states that she should not keep Desmond out of danger "just because of feelings she may or may not have" for him.
  • In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Lucy has Assassin's Creed: Project Legacy up on her computer in the Sanctuary, set to the memory sequence for Mario Auditore.
  • While Desmond talks to Lucy outside the Villa in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, she comments that nearly a decade of her life has been spent searching for the Pieces of Eden. Also in Assassin's Creed II, Rebecca says that it has been 7 years since they last met. This would mean that Lucy spent her mid-teens (16-17 onward) searching for the Pieces of Eden.
  • Lucy's password for her e-mail account is Juno57. This proved to be foreshadowing, as it was Juno who forced Desmond to stab her.
  • In a very rare glitch, on her way to the Colosseum in the van with Desmond, she can be seen wearing her outfit from Assassin's Creed II.
  • When stabbed by Desmond, Lucy eyes can be seen to move and look at Desmond just a split second before they fall to the ground.
  • While traveling through the tunnels under Monterrigioni you will comes across some gates which are stuck, to over come these obstacles Lucy has to crawl under these gates which may be a possible reference to Princess Farah from Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, another Ubisoft game, in which the Princess must crawl through narrow cracks and holes in walls to get to the other side.
