Amritsar is a city in north-west India and the spiritual centre of the Sikh religion in the state of Punjab.
History
The city was founded by Guru Ram Das who gave it the name Amritsar, which he named after a sacred lake in 1574. In the same year, he picked the site and ordered the construction of the Harmandir Sahib, commonly known as the "Golden Temple". The construction would not be completed until 1604, 29 years after his death.[1]
Ram Das' successor, Guru Arjan would go on to construct another sacred site in the city, on the same location where the first guru, Guru Nanak would go to meditate.[1]
Amritsar became the capital of Punjab after the creation of the Sikh Empire by Ranjit Singh in 1801.[1] By 1839, ruins of the First Civilization remained intact underneath the city, where Ranjit Singh kept the Koh-i-Noor hidden. As of 1839, Amritsar also served as the headquarters of the Indian Brotherhood of Assassins.[2]
