The Scandinavian Trade Market of Kaupang, sketch by Jean-Claude Golvin / Contemporary

It is said that the famous naval Battle of Hafrsfjord took place near Stavanger in the late 8th century CE. The battle pitted Harald Fairhair against a coalition of petty kings determined to prevent the young jarl's rise to power.

Among Harald's adersaries was a man named Kjotve the Rich, Jarl of Agder. He was the inspiration for the despicable Kjotve the Cruel, whose actions in Assassin's Creed: Valhalla launch the player on a quest for vengeance.

To create Stavanger in Assassin's Creed, the development team drew inspiration from the trade market of Kaupang. Kaupang, picture here, is located near the modern day city of Oslo, in Norway.
