Bell was raised in Michigan, United States by her mother Lorelei and father Tom Bell, who works for WOAI-TV as a news director in San Antonio. At the age of two, her parents divorced and her father re-married with a woman that had two daughters, Sara and Jody. Bell was raised in Michigan, United States by her mother Lorelei and father Tom Bell. She graduated from high school in 1998, after being heavily involved with her school's drama department.

After high school, Bell moved to New York City where she majored in musical theatre at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. However, in 2001 Bell left her university prior to graduation in order to accept a role in the musical The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.
