A Chinese junk

A junk (船) is Chinese-designed ship that typically has a central rudder, a flat hull and transom, and angled tanja sails braced with regularly-spaced battens.[1] Developed during the Song dynasty from 960 to 1279 CE, even early junks were efficient and robust enough for over long distance travel over open sea. Their hull's and sails' designs made them superior to Western ships, which would later adopt the same format.[2]
