Joséphine de Beauharnais (née Marie Joseph Rose Tascher de la Pagerie; 23 June 1763 – 29 May 1814) was the first wife of Napoleon Bonaparte, as well as the first Empress of France.

Joséphine was initially the mistress of Paul Barras, who would later introduce her to Napoleon. The latter became smitten with her, forsaking his relationship with Désirée Clary.
