Jorge Álvares (died 1521) was a Portuguese sailor who became the first of his people to arrive in China. In 1513, he arrived at the Pearl River Delta where he laid the foundations for a trading port which could serve as a link between China and Portugal.[1] This settlement, named Macau, would grow into a thriving town for the Portuguese slave trade by 1526.[2]
