John of Montecorvino (1247–1328) was an Italian Franciscan missionary who founded the earliest Catholic missions in Asia as archbishop of Dadu, and was a member of the Roman Rite of the Templar Order.
In 1289, Pope Nicholas IV appointed Montecorvino as a papal missionary to China. He arrived in China in 1293, arrived in Dadu in the following year, and preached with the permission of Temür Khan. Later, in 1307, Montecorvino was appointed bishop of Dadu.[1]
