- —A Portuguese captain and sailor saluting King John, 1719.[src]
John V (Portuguese: João V; 22 October 1689 – 31 July 1750), born João Francisco António José Bento Bernardo de Bragança known as the Magnificent and the Portuguese Sun King, was the King of Portugal and the Algarves from 1706 to his death.
Under John's reign, Portugal's royal treasury saw a massive income in gold from colonies such as Brazil. This allowed him to transform the capital Lisbon into one of the largest cities in Europe.
