John Russell, 1st Earl of Bedford (c. 1485 – 14 March 1555) was an English royal minister.
In 1540, King Henry VIII seized the garden belonging to Westminster Abbey as part of the dissolution of the monasteries across the United Kingdom,[1] in which the crown forcibly disbanded religious institutions and took their assets.[2] In 1552,[1] the garden land was granted to Russell, though he showed little interest in it and left it unattended.[3]
