Joe was a member of the Templar Order, and possessed a severely unstable psychological state, leading him to murder the civilians of New York.
As he was afraid of daylight, Joe always moved at night, striking fear into the populace and leading to him gaining such an infamy that his name was only ever spoken in hushed tones. However, since his true name was known to none, he gained the moniker "Joe" after one of his victims screamed out the name as he struck them down.
His genetic memories were later used as an Animi Avatar by the Templar company Abstergo Industries, for the training of their Animus recruits, under the title of the Nightstalker.
