Izumo no Okuni (出雲 阿国; c. 1578 – c. 1613) was a Japanese entertainer and shrine maiden.[1] Around 1603, Izumo devised a way of advertising her wares by dancing on a stage, usually cross-dressing as a man with swords and doing comedy vignettes. Many came to watch her performance, including Portuguese merchants.[2] Izumo's work is thought of being the beginning of both Kabuki theater[1] and the profession of the Geisha.[2]
