The Isle of Ely Monastery was a Benedictine monastery on Ely when it was still an island until the Fenlands were drained of its water during the 17th century. Founded by Saint Æthelthryth in 672,[1] it stood until the 12th century, when it was demolished and rebuilt as the modern-day Ely Cathedral.
In 873, the Anglo-Saxon ealdorman and Order of the Ancients member Wigmund sought refuge in the monastery after the city of Grantebridge was recaptured by the Vikings led by Soma. Wigmund intended to remain in the monastery until he had received aid from the Order. However, this was prevented when Soma and her ally Eivor Varinsdottir raided the monastery, killing Wigmund within the abbey.[2]
