In "reality", Those Who Came Before edited the human skeleton to match their own, to give humans a much better chance of survival.
Humans were enslaved by Those Who Came Before, being forced to work for them by the Pieces of Eden. Eventually, humans rebelled and war broke out. Through strength of numbers, humanity won the war. After the war, solar flares decimated the Earth, leaving only a small number of Humans.
