Henry John Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston (20 October 1784 – 18 October 1865) was an English Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

In 1857, a contest was held to find a design for the new Foreign Office building. Though he placed second, Prime Minister Derby hired George Gilbert Scott for the job because he loved Scott's Gothic style. Though before Scott could begin, Lord Palmerston was elected Prime Minister and demanded that Scott build the Foreign Office in a Classical style. The Foreign Office was finally built in 1868, in a Classical Italianate style, which both Scott and Palmerston disliked.[1]

His first term as Prime Minister ended with his resignation in 1858 after failing to defeat charges that his government had harbored assassins who attempted to kill President Napoleon III of France; he was succeeded in the position by Scott.[2]
