Hagia Irene or Hagia Eirene, otherwise known as the Church of Holy Peace, is an Orthodox church located in the outer courtyard of Topkapı Palace in Constantinople.
History
Formerly the site of a pre-Christian temple, the temple was restored by Byzantine Emperor Justinian I during the 6th century after it was burned down. Since then, it has served as an Orthodox church for almost 1000 years.[1]
After the Ottoman conquest, the church was converted into an armory for the Janissaries due to its close proximity to the royal palace.[1]
Today, the church operates as a museum and a music hall.[1]
