I found out that grunts were not only in Ming China as regular infantry.

Grunts are a guard type used by many different militaries. They had some small differences from the regulars and were used as the second most common type of a military. The nickname grunt was given to regular infantry of Ming Dynasty for unknown reasons unlike European nicknames of regulars.
