Great auks were a flightless bird that could be found in the North Atlantic prior to their extinction. It was the only modern species in the genus Pinguinus. It is unrelated to the birds now known as penguins which were discovered later and so named by sailors because of their physical resemblance to the great auk. They often gathered in flocks on rocky beaches and flee into the water when approached.
The Assassin-turned-Templar Shay Cormac frequently encountered them when exploring islands in the North Atlantic.
