George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham (1592 – 1628) was an English courtier and statesman. He was a favorite and self-described "lover" of King James VI and I.[1]

Biography

In 1624, Villiers purchased the York House from the Archbishop of York. Two years later, wanting his new home to be accessible from the river, he had the York Watergate built.[2]
