In the 26 of December of 1476, Galeazzo Maria Sforza was murdered in the church of Santo Stefano. An observance was supposed to be celebrated that day in the church, and the duke was to be present for the mass. The conspirators, Carlo Visconti, Gerolamo Olgiati and Giovanni Lampugnani chose this moment for the assassination. They were helped by approximately 30 armed allies. When the duke arrived, Lampugnani kneeled before him. After a moment he then rose and stabbed his neck while Visconti, Olgiati and Lampugnani's servant joined in. As the allies came to fight the duke's guards, the murderers escaped but Lampugnani entangled himself in a curtain. One of the guards took advantage of this to kill him.

In [[Assassin's Creed: Lineage]], the assassination of Galeazzo Sforza is a part of the [[Templars]] plan and the four main conspirators are members of the Templar order. After torturing a Templar who reveals the plan, [[Lorenzo de' Medici]] sends [[Giovanni Auditore]] to save the duke but he fails. The scene's details are rather truthful despite the fact that Lampugnani stabs Sforza at the stomach and not at the neck, and also that he doesn't entangle himself in a curtain but being pursued, he runs into a cul de sac and gets killed by a guard.

The two others then joined him as a dozen of their armed allies fought Sforza's bodyguards and Giovanni Auditore. Visconti and Olgiati, having stabbed their ennemy to death then fled. Lampugnani started running too as one of Sforza's bodyguards came after him. He ended up in a cul de sac, and was killed by the bodyguard when Giovanni tried to convince him not to. Galeazzo Maria Sforza (1444-1476) was the duke of Milan, husband of Lucreca Landriani and father of Caterina Sforza, who would later become the countess of Forlì and Imola.

Assassination

In 1476, the cities of Milan and Florence declared an alliance, thereby strengthening each other. The alliance had a negative impact on the Templars as they were conspiring to take the city of Florence. Aware of the fact that Sforza's death would weaken, at least temporarily Lorenzo de'Medici's hold his city, they brought up a plan to murder him. During the same time in Florence, Giovanni Auditore and Lorenzo de'Medici were hearing rumors about an upheaval in Milan. Lorenzo then send his fellow assassin to investigate. Giovanni attacked a group of templars led by Rodrigo Borgia one night. Borgia fled, but Giovanni could keep one of the templars alive. Lorenzo's men tortured him, and under the pressure of pain, the templar finally revealed their plan:

The 26 December, the day of Santo Stefano in Milan, Sforza would go in the city's greatest church to attend at the mass.
