A view of the Fortified Marble Quarry

The Fortified Marble Quarry is a quarry located in the middle of Paros Island, Greece.

This was whence the Parian marble, appreciated and valued for its whiteness and transparency, came. Shipped throughout the world to be used to craft fine sculptured and make grand buildings, the Parian economy rested on the marble.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

In 429 BCE, Euneas, a Spartan admiral serving the oligarch of Naxos, Myrrine, came to Paros to talk peace. Instead, he and his ship and crew were ambushed and demolished, with survivors taken to the quarry. Sometime later, the Spartan misthios Kassandra infiltrated the quarry, freeing Euneas and others, burning the Parian supplies, claiming their valuables and killing their captains.[2]
