A felucca (Arabic: فلوكة) is a traditional wooden sailboat of Egyptian origin used in the north Africa region, especially along the Nile, on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, and in the Red Sea. Its rig consists of one or two lateen sails.[1]
History
As its use spread from Egypt, the felucca eventually also reached Greece. By the time of the Peloponnesian War in the 5th century BCE, the feluccas were a common sight along the shores of the Peloponnese. As light-weight vessels, they were unsuitable for travel on the Aegean Sea itself, and broke down easily in the tossing of the ocean waves.[2]
Used throughout Egypt's millennia-long history, the felucca is a staple form of water transportation.[1]
During the Battle of the Nile, the pharaoh Ptolemy XIII attempted to escape via a felucca, but was later attacked and killed by crocodiles.[3]
