Albany City Hall

Albany City Hall is the seat of government for the city of Albany, New York.

History

The first city hall in Albany, built by Dutch settlers in the 1660s, was known as the Stadt Huys. It is speculated that the British replaced it with a larger building on the same site around 1740, although the name Stadt Huys remained.[1]

At the suggestion of the British Lords of Trade, the Albany Congress convened at the city hall from June to July 1754 to discuss the colonies' common defence as the Seven Years' War broke out. During the congress, Benjamin Franklin spoke in front of the city hall, suggesting that the colonies unite.[1]
