The Dome of the Rock is an Islamic shrine and major landmark located in the city of Jerusalem. It was built between 689 and 691 CE atop of the Temple Mount, and the landmark was believed to be built on the farthest mosque that the Prophet of Islam, Muhammad, came to during the Night Journey.
As one of the most recognized and important Islamic shrines in the city, the site of the Temple Mount is coveted by the three religions of Islam, Judaism and Christianity.
Trivia
- Though the dome appears golden in Assassin's Creed, it was not gilded until 1963. It was covered with black lead during the Third Crusade, had a cross on the top, and was converted into a Christian church until Jerusalem was recaptured by Salāḥ ad-Dīn.
- A viewpoint was positioned on top of the roof, as the top of the dome itself was inaccessible.
