Captain Diokles (died 420s BCE) was a Kydonian guard-captain active in the city of Kydonia, Messara, during the 5th century BCE.
Biography
At some point during his time in Kydonia, Diokles and his men took a turn for the worse and became little more than bandits, inflaming the already tense relationship between the military and the merchants. One of the merchants in the area took note of this, and asked the visiting Spartan misthios Kassandra to help with the matter.[1]
As Kassandra engaged with Diokles' men, he learned of the textile merchant's part in the matter, and killed him, claiming the gems the merchant had promised Kassandra. Diokles also left Kassandra a note directing her to where he'd be waiting.[1]
Diokles was certain of his victory if only because they outnumbered the misthios, but Kassandra ended up killing them all, claiming the gems as well as Diokles' helmet.[1]
