Demaratos (died c. 480 BCE) was King of Sparta from 515 BCE until his depostion in 491 BCE.
Following his depostion, Demaratos exiled himself to Persia where he was welcomed by King Xerxes I of Persia. While Xerxes' forces were in Anatolia in preparing for another invasion of Greece, Xerxes asked Demaratos if the Greeks would resist his army. In response, Demaratos remarked that the Greeks were wise and courageous, and the Spartans specifically would never flee and fight until they died.[1]
While Xerxes' laughed at Demaratos' comment, the former Spartan king's words would later be proven through at the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BCE.[1]
