Oral tradition has it that Deirdre's Christian parents, alarmed that her uncanny "second sight" was the work of the devil, turned her out into the forest at the age of seven or eight.

Deirdre survived as best she could until she stumbled upon an aging and infirm druid. Unable to to care for himself, he taught Deirdre the pagan arts of medicine, and she prolonged his life by several years.

Despite this uncannily Brothers Grimm-like upbringing, Deirdre soon became celebrated among Ireland's pagans as both a seer and a healer.
