Aegina is an island south of the Isle of Salamis in the Saronic Gulf.
During the Peloponnesian War when the Spartan misthios Kassandra visited the island, she found it uninhabited. Among the ruins and statues of Hygieia were just wild animals like lions who had overtaken a former campsite and wild cattle.[1]
Behind the scenes
Historically, Aegina was a well-populated rival of Athens until Athenians expelled its inhabitants in 431 BCE at the beginning of the Peloponnesian War.
