Chios (Greek: Χίος), also called Chora, is the main town of the island of Chios, Greece. In classical antiquity it was a major polis located in the Affluence Bay region of Petrified Islands.

Its inhabitants hugely profited from the exportation of mastic, wines and figs. Among its landmarks, Chios boasted a temple dedicated to the god Poseidon.

During the Peloponnesian War the Spartan misthios Kassandra explored the city.[1]

Trivia

  • Chora (χώρα) is a Greek word which simply means 'town'. It is often used as the name of the main town on an island, following the common practice in Greece when the name of the island itself is the same as the name of the principal town.
