Charles V (21 January 1338 – 16 September 1380), known as Charles the Wise, was King of France from 1364 to his death.
During his reign, France was involved in the Hundred Years' War, and many construction projects were undertaken by him. One of these involved the conversion of the Louvre into a residence, to which Charles moved there from the Palais de la Cité.
Another project was the Bastille, a fortress intended to protect the Porte Saint-Antoine and the adjoining Hôtel Saint-Pol. The Saint-Pol in turn had been constructed under Charles away from the busy area around the Louvre.
