Byodoin Temple (平等院) is a Buddhist temple in Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. It was formerly part of Yamashiro Province during the Sengoku period.
History
In late June 1582, the Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke traveled to the temple to meet the head of the Ise clan. Meeting a sickly monk who identified himself as Ise Sadatame, he told the pair about how he had lost his position as head of the clan after being poisoned by his younger brother Sadaoki. Sadatame then asked Naoe and Yasuke to retrieve a letter from his brother that had been lost by his messenger near Arashiyama, as well as to seek out his ally Ujimasa at Kiyomizudera Temple, who could help them gain access to Sadaoki's stronghold at Yamazaki Castle.[1] While there, the pair recovered two lost pages scattered around its grounds.[2]
