Bolingbroc Castle was a castle in 9th century Lincolnscire, England.
History
In 875, the Viking Eivor Varinsdottir found herself at Bolingbroc Castle after her investigation for the Ealdorman Hundbeorht led her to track him to the castle. Surrounded by Anglo-Saxon guards, Bolingbroc Castle was patrolled as Eivor stealthily broke in and searched for the ealdorman. Going within the castle itself, Eivor found herself probing the lower quarters of the castle as she heard voices. Upon her discovery, Eivor found the ealdorman's corpse being taken care of a nun, Galwyna, who stated that his illness finally took him. Eivor took proof of the ealdorman's death and left Galwyna to keep tending to the late ealdorman.[1]
During her journey, Eivor ventured within the castle grounds and found a chest within one of the homes. Opening it, Eivor retrieved the Galloglach Trousers. She also battled and defeated a Anglo-Saxon gedriht and later claimed a Nickel ingot from his personal effects and then found a Book of Knowledge, which led to learning the ability, "Focus of the Nornir."[2]
Behind the scenes
Bolingbroke first appears in the historical records of the 1086 Domesday Book as "Bolingborc". The stone castle as it is depicted is anachronistic. It was built by Ranulf, Earl of Chester in the 1200s upgrading a Norman motte and bailey castle built a century earlier which in turn had replaced previous Anglo-Saxon earthwork fortifications. Presently, the castle, now in ruins, is a national monument in Lincolnshire.[3]
Like with many other forts in the game, the anachronistic depiction was a design choice to add more verticality to the gameplay.[4]
