Musa ibn Nusayr Fort, also referred to as AlUla Fort, was a fort located in central al-Ula, north of the Masjid Al'Itham mosque. It was named after the Umayyad Caliphate General Musa ibn Nusayr,[1] whom the incumbent Governor of Egypt Abd al-Aziz ibn Marwan appointed in 703 CE as Governor of Ifriqiya,[2] what is now eastern Algeria, Tunisia, and western Libya.[3] Built atop a 50-meter high outcrop, it offered a view of the town and surrounding valley below, allowing for better observation and defense of both,[1] but by the 860s, a robbers gang occupied and drastically repurposed it as a prison and torture facility for their leader 'Abis.
History
In the 860s, the Alamut Hidden One Basim ibn Ishaq traveled to al-Ula in search of his father Ishaq and learned of the threat that the robbers posed in the region. While following one of them out of the market, he pickpocketed a note that detailed hidden spots where the thieves kept their weapons, with even one such cache being inside the fort. Continuing his tailing of the robber led Basim to an ambush in an alley, and he was taken to the fort while unconscious.[4]
The prison's atmosphere was oppressive, both for the prisoners, whom 'Abis used as live test subjects for his poisonous concoctions, and for the robbers working there who suffered under ruthless captains. While incarcerated, Basim spoke with a prisoner in the neighboring cell and learned about the prison as well as where his father lived, but he was unable to help the man before 'Abis' experiments killed him.[5]
With the aid of Enkidu and the prison cook, Basim escaped his cell and made his way to 'Abis' laboratory, freeing other captives during the breakout. Basim fatally stabbed 'Abis with his own redirected knife strike, but was surprised when 'Abis produced a spare poisoned blade and stabbed him in the chest before dying. Immediately suffering toxic effects, Basim fled the fort and attempted to reach his peddler friend Dervis back at their tent in the Travelers' Camp. He collapsed along the way but Darvis was alerted to the situation and rescued him. While Basim healed, Dervis infiltrated the complex to retrieve Basim's confiscated items and also claimed 'Abis' weapon for Basim to use.[5]
Behind the scenes
The Musa ibn Nusayr Fort is a fictional place created for Valley of Memory, the 2025 downloadable expansion for the video game Assassin's Creed: Mirage (2023). In the expansion's release on 18 November 2025 with Update 1.1.0, this landmark was originally named "Musa ibn Nusayr Fort". It was renamed to "AlUla Fort" on 17 December with Update 1.1.1 but kept its original name in both the memory "Wares and Shadows" and in the site's database entry.
