If the player, as Ezio Auditore, gets on top of an occupied gondola, the civilian rowing it will automatically jump off and drown. Unlike the bodies of other non-player characters that fall into water, those of drowned gondoliers neither float nor exhibit underwater silhouettes. However, grabbing onto the front, notched portion of the gondola allows Ezio to ride along with the gondolier, without prompting them to jump off.

Ezio can fall from any height onto a gondola—as long as he was not diving—and not take any damage as a result. In addition, it is possible to glitch a gondolier by dropping onto the boat from a building and landing directly behind them. The boat will stop moving, allowing Ezio to steer it as normal, but until he leaves the boat and gets back on, the gondolier will continue to row along, unaware of his presence.

In Assassin's Creed II, certain gondolas covered with cloth may spawn in Venice. These gondolas can be looted for florins, but they cannot be piloted. Looting a gondola in clear sight of guards will not provoke them, but they will acknowledge the act.

Similar vehicles
The naval cannon, which features in the memory "Loose Cannon" in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, has identical controls to that of the gondola, with the exception that the player can switch between rowing and firing the cannon. Gameplay-wise, the gondola functions the same as any other rowboat in the series, such as the felucca in Assassin's Creed: Origins and Assassin's Creed: Odyssey.

"I am become death, the destroyer of worlds."
―Oppenheimer, reflecting on the atomic bomb's first test, 1965.[src]-[m]

Julius Robert Oppenheimer (1904 – 1967) was an American theoretical physicist and professor of physics at the University of California, Berkeley.[1]

Biography

Oppenheimer is best known for his role during World War II as the scientific director for the Manhattan Project, an American initiative to create the first nuclear weapons.[2] In the summer of 1945, Abstergo Industries authorized the tests for Oppenheimer's atomic bomb, intending to end the war with a nuclear explosion to bring the turmoil necessary to build a new world.[3] On 16 July, the first successful test of the atomic bomb was dropped at the air base at Alamogordo, New Mexico.[2]

In 1965, when asked to reflect on what went through his head at the time of the explosion, Oppenheimer quoted a verse from the Hindu scripture Bhagavad Gita's tenth chapter, which he translated as "I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds."[1]

Legacy

In 2012, the Assassin Clay Kaczmarek collected details on Oppenheimer's involvement with the atomic bomb while Abstergo held him captive at their Animus Project laboratory in Rome. He then hid the information within the Animus 1.28 in Glyph puzzles for his successor, Desmond Miles, to find.[3] Sometime in early September,[4] Desmond solved the puzzle set titled after the Gita's famous verse, in which Oppenheimer was revealed to have been unwittingly affiliated with Abstergo.[3] Around 2013, the Initiates gathered more information on Oppenheimer and presented it in their own database.[2]
