The Battle of Salamis was a naval battle fought between an alliance of Greek city-states under Themistokles and the Achaemenid Empire under King Xerxes I in 480 BCE, during the Greco-Persian Wars.
A victory the Greeks, Xerxes was forced to retreat to Asia with much of his army, leaving his generals to complete the conquest of Greece. The battle also marked Themistokles' rise to popularity due to his victory.[1]
