The San Giovanni dei Fiorentini was the national church of Florence in Rome.

In 1508, Pope Leo X initiated an architectural competition for the church to be renovated. The competition was won by an architect by the name of Sansovino, but complications caused construction to slowly gind to a halt. Many different people tried to finish the church over the next two centuries, before it was finally completed in 1734.
