The Basilica Aemilia (Italian: Basilica Emilia) was a structure in Rome that once stood in the Roman Forum. Its remains survive to this day.
History
Destroyed when the Visigoths sacked Rome, clues for the Basilica's primary purpose is left behind. When the occupants fled, they dropped coins which remained in the tile floor as the building was set aflame.
After the smoke cleared and the attack was over, the coins had been welded to the basilica floor from the extreme heat, suggesting that the main function of the Basilica was as offices for money lenders or tax-collectors.
