What I meant is that they were corrupted. Templars no longer cared about the good of humanity, now it was all about personal gain.
Heck, ACR Abstergo Files - LibidoDominandi - explain this situation perfectly. It also shows that modern Templars are reallly ashamed of those times. I'm really hoping that this was writers' intention from the beggining... or the other guys had to clean up the mess that Corey May left behind. I'm REALLY hoping it's the first one.
And yeah, Savonarola and Massimo were not Templars. They were so called "greater men in the shadow of the Cross". "They became what we (Templars) should have aspired to be".

I don't really know much about Templars outside of Italy and Turkey of that era. Was there anything interesting about them in AC2 Discovery?
